The City of Garland is inviting people to shop at downtown businesses today. The city is holding some special events for Small Business Saturday.
The city is offering hot drinks, a ticket good for merchandise at downtown businesses and a Garland holiday ornament to visitors between 11:00am and 2:00pm. They'll have a booth set up in the 700 block of Main Street near Latham Bakery.
"Then, we encourage people to redeem their tickets and enjoy a full day's shopping experience at the great restaurants, shops and other businesses that we have in our downtown district," said Hunter Williams with Garland's Downtown Development Office.
He notes that some businesses downtown have faced challenges in 2022 as the city has worked on a major renovation project on the downtown square. Construction has caused some traffic disruptions. The square will eventually have a larger recreation area and a performance space. Work should be finished in the fall of 2023. In the meantime, Williams hopes people will spend some of their holiday shopping dollars today at some of the businesses in the area.
"The thought behind the event is really just to support our downtown business community and to promote shopping where your heart is, supporting our central business district and the small businesses that comprise it," he said.
