In response to the recent surge in measles cases across Texas, Garland Independent School District (GISD) announced that it will offer free MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccines to qualifying students this week. The vaccine clinic will be held on Thursday, March 13, at the Manuel and Maria Valle Student Services Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The initiative aims to provide immunizations to students who do not have insurance, are Medicaid eligible, or are American Indian, Native American, or Alaskan Native. Families with insurance are encouraged to contact their primary care physician or the Garland Health Department for vaccination options. To participate, students must bring their immunization records and be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the appointment.

Garland ISD's decision comes as measles cases continue to rise in the state, with over 146 reported cases, including one in North Texas. The district's vaccination rate for measles was 96.9% during the 2023-24 school year. Health officials emphasize the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to achieve herd immunity and prevent the spread of contagious diseases like measles.

Appointments for the vaccine clinic can be made by calling the clinic at 972-494-8538. More information is available on the Manuel and Maria Valle Student Services Center website.
