A Granbury ISD student was killed Monday morning when he was struck by a school bus, officials say.

The incident happened just after 6 a.m. at the intersection of Pecos River Drive and Brazos River Drive, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Texas DPS said the bus was pulling away from a stop at which it picked up students when the child ran up the driver's side and in front of the bus.

The boy was transported to Lake Granbury Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, Texas DPS said.

There were eight students on the bus at the time of the incident.

The student who died attended Emma Roberson Early Learning Academy in the 1500 block of Misty Meadow Drive, Granbury ISD said.

Granbury ISD posted the news on its Facebook page late Monday morning.

"I know you share in the devastation of this loss and may have many questions. We all have the expectation that students will be safe on our buses and in our district," Granbury ISD Superintendent Courtney Morawski wrote in a statement. "We are already working to fully understand the situation and will share more information after we have had the time to investigate the incident."

The district said chaplains, counselors, and staff would be available to help students and parents grieving the loss.

Police are investigating the incident, the district said.
