FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - A Fort Worth man involved in a fatal crash last fall will not be indicted for his actions.
Jeton Avdiu, 39, had been charged with manslaughter and two counts of child endangerment in connection with the Oct. 10, 2020, crash on northbound I-35W, in which Mason Crews, 33, of Watauga was killed.
On Wednesday, a Tarrant County grand jury declined to indict him.
The police report at the time stated that Avdiu crossed several lanes of I-35W near Lancaster Ave. in order to exit the freeway.
Avdiu's attorneys, however, say he crossed the lanes to evade a crash that happened in front of him.
"We have always believed that Jeton did what any father would do in the same situation," Avdiu's attorneys said in a statement. "He tried to prevent a collision and protect his wife and two young children, who were also in the car. Sadly, a terrible accident still occurred. This was a tragic loss, but it was not a crime."
Crews' family has filed a $1 million lawsuit against Avdiu and another driver involved in the crash.
That lawsuit is still pending.
