About 20 Grand Prairie families have been displaced because of Wednesday night's three-alarm fire at the Kensington Apartments, a complex on Houston Street near Northwest 19th.
Officials say the first 911 calls came in just before 9 p.m. and fire crews found very heavy flames and smoke were shooting from the second floor when they arrived at the scene.
Firefighters helped evacuate the building and no one was hurt.
The Red Cross and the city's Office of Emergency Management were on scene helping the displaced families find a place for the night.
Officials have not yet said what was the cause of the fire.
