A 59-year-old man faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a suspected road rage shooting that injured a 7-year-old in Grapevine on Thursday night, police say.
An armed driver opened fire on a pickup truck on the northbound side of State Highway 121 near Bass Pro Drive around 8 p.m. Thursday, Grapevine police said.
The truck, which was carrying three children, was struck, shattering a window. A 7-year-old girl with flying glass. She was treated and released from a nearby hospital.
According to police, the truck’s driver returned fire in self-defense and managed to pull off at a RaceTrac on Grapevine Mills Parkway to call law enforcement. He provided a license plate number for the other vehicle.
Police said they identified the owner of the vehicle and noted he lived in Flower Mound. Officers made contact with the owner by phone, but the man disconnected the call and refused to speak with them.
Because the man had already opened fire on another vehicle, Grapevine and Flower Mound police set a perimeter outside the man's home. Negotiators were able to get the man to exit his home around 2:15 a.m. Friday. He was arrested and taken to the Grapevine Detention Center.
The suspect is identified as 59-year-old John Schwoyer. He faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
