A grass fire turned into an apartment fire yesterday on the southwest side of Dallas.
Just before 4 p.m. the grass fire broke out in a field between two apartment complexes on Old Hickory Trail near Hampton and Wheatland Road.
Dallas firefighters got help from DeSoto, Duncanville, Lancaster, Cockrell Hill, Hutchins and from a Dallas police helicopter which provided a bird's eye view to direct the firefighters.
About an hour later, the fire had burned more than 20 acres, but at least it was out. But while fire crews were dousing hot spots they saw smoke coming from one of the nearby apartment buildings.
It turned out some burning embers had ignited something in one of the rain gutters. Firefighters hustled up there and extinguished the flames before it got too bad.
Officials say two units were damaged badly enough that the renters had to find friends or family to spend the night with.
