Hope Lodge opens doors for cancer patients, families

DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- The American Cancer Society has officially welcomed its first guests in the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Hope Lodge in Dallas.

The $25 million facility, located on the Baylor University Medical Center campus, offers cancer patients and their caregivers a home away from home while traveling to receive care from any medical center in North Texas.

"It allows these patients and their caregivers really to focus on just one thing, and that's getting better," says Jeff Fehlis, executive vice president of the American Cancer Society's South Region.

The lodge is expected to provide more than 18,000 nights of free lodging annually. The 40,000 square-foot facility includes 50 private guest suites, each with two beds and a private bathroom. In addition, the facility features common living areas, dining room, laundry facilities, library, meditation room and outdoor garden. Patients and their caregivers also have access to the current offerings of the American Cancer Society's programs and services.

"Many folks will travel in from out of town and be here for a lengthy stay," Fehlis says. "And the beauty of our Hope Lodge is that whether is a week or four weeks...come stay with us and you stay free of charge."

The American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge capital campaign, conducted in collaboration with Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation, surpassed its fundraising goal with extraordinary support from generous individuals and organizations. The Gene and Jerry Jones Family was the lead donor in the effort.

Other major donors included the Don and Trudy Steen Charitable Foundation, Jeff and Carmen York Family, The Moody Foundation, the Horner Family, J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation and the Shapard Family. More than $32 million has been raised for this project to date, and the American Cancer Society and Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation continue to seek support for ongoing operating expenses.
