The path to success as a solopreneur is filled with challenges and fears, but also with opportunities to create a fulfilling and lucrative business.
Getting to the most successful version of your solopreneur self is the topic of Liz Steblay's new book: "Succeeding as a Solopreneur: Six Keys to Taking the Leap, Winning Clients and Building Wealth."
One of the key aspects that Steblay addresses is the fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) that often plagues solopreneurs.
"The FUD monster keeps whispering in your ear and chewing away at your confidence. Some people call it imposter syndrome, but, unfortunately, you can never eliminate it completely. I've been self-employed for 20 years, and I still get FUD. But you can indeed mitigate it," Steblay says.
Steblay emphasizes that overcoming FUD involves a crucial level of self-awareness.
"The first step is awareness, to realize when it's holding you back. And then just tell that FUD monster, 'You know what? Thank you for looking out for me, but I'm gonna do this anyway, and it tends to shrink and disappear,'" she adds.
Another one of the barriers between solopreneurs and success is fear of sales. But Steblay, instead, introduces the concept of "relationship development."
"Don't get so caught up in serving your clients that you let your network get cold. My guiding principle for years was one person, in person, once a week," Steblay advises.
She also acknowledges the multifaceted nature of running a successful solopreneur business and stresses the importance of recognizing one's limitations.
"I think the most important thing is to quickly realize what you're not very good at and hire someone else to do it for you," says Steblay.
For those considering taking the leap into solopreneurship, Steblay suggests considering important factors such as having a financial cushion to cover expenses during the initial stages of business development and a healthy amount of confidence to succeed.
"Being a solopreneur is the hardest job you'll ever have because you have to learn new things and push your boundaries," she adds.
With her comprehensive guide, Liz Steblay aims to provide solopreneurs with the tools and knowledge necessary to navigate the challenges, unlock opportunities, and build successful and fulfilling businesses as independent professionals.
