Hutchins city leaders held a closed-door meeting Wednesday night to discuss a reported federal plan to convert a roughly 1-million-square-foot warehouse into one of the nation’s largest immigrant detention centers.

The special session with city attorneys produced no vote and no official action, even as state lawmakers and community leaders publicly opposed the proposal ahead of the meeting.

Reports from multiple news outlets say the facility under consideration could house up to 9,500 people, a population larger than Hutchins itself, which sits just south of downtown Dallas.

City officials have emphasized that no permits, leases, or direct federal communication about such a facility have been received, and immigration enforcement remains under federal jurisdiction.

The controversy has drawn vocal criticism from residents and lawmakers, who argue the scale of the rumored detention center could strain local infrastructure and raise broader concerns about human rights and community impact.

What we know

The warehouse site is privately owned and located near the interchange of Interstate 45 and Interstate 20.

Local leaders say they oppose the idea and are seeking clarity amid conflicting reports.

Federal agencies have not publicly confirmed any specific plans for the facility.
