Officials found the identity of the man who was killed from last Thursday's wild chase.
The Ellis County Justice of the Peace said the innocent killed was 73-year-old Anthony Robert Welch of Red Oak. He was driving on I-35E when he was hit by a car driven by a murder suspect. That suspect who has not been identified got out of his car and started shooting at Dallas Police.
They shot back, critically wounding the man. The Department of Public Safety has not released his condition since the shooting. Nor has anyone in law enforcement said anything about the murder investigation that led to the chase.
DPS says what started as a crash led to the shutdown of southbound lanes of Interstate 35E in Red Oak on Thursday afternoon. It was later revealed that the crash resulted from a Dallas officer-involved shooting and chase of a suspect.
So far it is known that the one suspect who was involved in the traffic crash was a Capital Murder suspect in Dallas County. Dallas police were chasing the suspect during a fast car chase. During the action, the suspect's vehicle hit another vehicle during the incident, causing the death of one innocent occupant, and the others injured.
The suspect then exited their crashed vehicle with a firearm and moved away from the officers trying to pursue them. Dallas police officers then discharged their weapons and hit the murder suspect.
The suspect and the occupants of the other vehicle were transported to a Dallas area hospital.
The Texas Department of Public Safety's Texas Ranger Division will now be leading the ongoing investigation. Red Oak police are warning drivers to expect delays and avoid the area if they can.
This is a developing story. Come back for updates.
