Icy roads prompt DART to stop service

Dallas Area Rapid Transit will end all bus and light rail service at noon Friday because of icy streets and advice from police and TxDOT not to travel.

"Of course, we see the untenable ice conditions out there right now," says DART's Gordon Shattles. "Really, the streets, all the roads in North Texas, are nothing but sheets of ice."

Shattles says DART made the decision after discussing options with its 13 member cities, TxDOT, and the National Weather Service.

"We had to make the decision one: for our passengers, but two: for our operators out there," he says. "Right now, the refrain from everyone is if you can possibly stay off the road, please do."

DART still has options for people relying on service. Paratransit service has been canceled and will resume Monday, but it will still be available for people who need trips for medical purposes such as dialysis treatment. Reservations can be made at www.dart.org/ridepara or by calling (214) 515-7272.

Shattles says people who are stranded at a station and need emergency service can call (214) 979-1111.

Trinity Railway Express is operating on a Saturday schedule Friday. TRE will return to its regular schedule Monday.

"All the cities and TxDOT have been fantastic trying to sand and brine to keep people safe on the roads, but when you're driving a 40-foot bus with passengers on there, safety comes first," Shattles says. "It's a very difficult decision for the agency but one we felt we had to make."

People can sign up for alerts at dart.org and get more information about this weekend's service schedule and cancellations at dart.org/winterweather.
