As Identity Theft Awareness Week (January 29 - February 2, 2024) cranks up, Terri Miller, a consumer education specialist at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), is on a mission to educate the public about the ever-present threat.

Miller says there are various ways we may unknowingly expose ourselves to identity theft, citing scenarios such as losing a wallet, having an online account compromised, or falling victim to old-fashioned methods like mailbox snooping or dumpster diving.

"We've seen that happen," she reveals.

Miller says there are several key indicators to look for when trying to spot identity theft.

She advises monitoring bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions and being vigilant about unfamiliar accounts appearing on credit reports.

"The first thing you want to do is check your credit report regularly. You can get a free copy of your credit report every single week from each of the credit bureaus," Miller says.

Also, don't fall for fake debt collections.

"If you're getting phone calls from a debt collector about debts that you're unaware of that you are like, I know that's not mine, it could be identity theft," Miller adds.

To further safeguard against identity theft, Miller stresses the significance of securely storing personal financial documents and not divulging sensitive information to unfamiliar contacts. The use of strong passwords and multifactor authentication for technological accounts is also highlighted as an essential protective measure.

IdentityTheft.gov is a tremendous resource for victims or suspected victims of identity theft. The platform offers comprehensive support, including step-by-step instructions for recovery and language support beyond English and Spanish.
