The person who admitted to opening fire in the cafeteria of Italy High School in Texas in 2018 has died. Chad Padilla was serving a 40-year prison sentence.
Padilla was 16 years old when he shot a 15 year old girl at the cafeteria. She survived, and Padilla plead "guilty" to charges of attempted capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was being held at the Telford Unit in northeast Texas. Staffers at that Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility found him unresponsive in his cell early Monday morning.
"EMS arrived and paramedics pronounced inmate Padilla deceased at 2:25 in the morning," Hurst said. "The Office of Inspector General was notified." That office is investigating the case as an apparent suicide.
