Founder of The Potter's House, Bishop T.D. Jakes announced his decision on Sunday to step down as senior pastor of the Dallas-based megachurch. The 67-year-old faith leader, known for his global influence and groundbreaking ministry, shared that his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts, will assume the roles of co-senior pastors starting in July.
The announcement marks a significant generational shift for the 30,000-member congregation, which has grown into one of the most influential churches in the United States since its establishment in 1996. Jakes, accompanied by his wife Serita Jakes, expressed gratitude to the congregation for their unwavering support over the years.
"You have been faithful to God, and you have been faithful to me," he said, holding back tears. "And I'm so grateful."
This transition follows a health scare Jakes experienced in November, when he suffered a heart attack during a sermon. The incident accelerated long-standing plans for succession, ensuring the church's continuity and future growth. Jakes emphasized that the move is not a departure but an expansion of his ministry. He will remain Chairman of the Board and spiritual overseer of The Potter's House, focusing on broader initiatives through the T.D. Jakes Group, including economic empowerment and community development.
Sarah Jakes Roberts, a bestselling author and pastor, has already made her mark in ministry with her Woman Evolve movement, which inspires women to embrace their potential. Touré Roberts, her husband, is also a respected pastor and leader.
In a heartfelt letter shared with the congregation, the Jakes family outlined their vision for the church's future, highlighting the importance of evolving to meet the spiritual, societal, and economic needs of the community. "This moment isn't an ending; it's an expansion," Jakes wrote. "Leadership is not static; it is dynamic. It demands the courage to evolve."
The announcement has sparked an outpouring of support from church members and the broader faith community, celebrating both the legacy of Bishop Jakes and the promise of new leadership.
