A Johnson County tank battery fire is out and Cresson firefighters were able to keep it from spreading.
Wednesday, a gas well tank battery erupted in flames southeast of Cresson, sending up billows of inky black smoke that could be seen for miles. Residents as far away as Benbrook reported seeing it.
Firefighters from the Cresson Volunteer Fire Department were on scene all afternoon pouring water on the other tanks in the battery to keep them from being engulfed. In the end, just that one tank was affected. The fire was extinguished just a little past 3:30 p.m.
The Johnson County Emergency Management office says the tank was mostly filled with saltwater with a little condensate or oil on top that is burning off, which would explain the extremely black smoke.
