It was a guilty verdict in the wrongful death trial in connection with the deadly crane collapse at an East Dallas apartment in 2019, and the jury has awarded the family of a woman killed in that incident a massive settlement.
The jury's verdict is dizzying, awarding $860 million, all against the Graystar developers. At the time, OSHA had cited the company with 17 safety violations in the past ten years. Some of those violations the company is still contesting.
The lawsuit was over the collapse of a crane during a strong storm that hit downtown Dallas in June of 2019. The crane, which was anchored just east of 75 Central in Dallas was not properly secured for the weekend and toppled on to the Elon City Lights apartments, killing 29-year-old Kiersten Symone Smith. Five other residents in the apartment block were also injured.
The jury did not hold the crane owner, Biggie Crane and Rigging Company liable.
The attorney for Greystar Development and Construction did not comment. The verdict is expected to be appealed.
