DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- A 35-year-old cold case is now closed. A Dallas County jury found David Rojas guilty of capital murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
The jury found 55-year-old David Rojas as the killer who nearly got away with murdering a grandmother 79-year-old Mary Hague Kelly in far west Dallas in 1989. She was sexually assaulted and her body was stuffed under her bed in her home on North Francis Street, roughly in the area of Westmoreland and Davis.
There was DNA found on some of her clothing. In 2022 a lab was able to develop a family tree based on that DNA and investigators say Rojas, who lived next door, was included. They then set up surveillance. When Rojas threw out an empty six-pack of beer, police seized it. Prosecutors say police were able to match the DNA from a beer bottle to the victim's clothing.
After the verdict, the victim's family spoke directly to the killer.
