Keene High School in Johnson County has canceled the remainder of its varsity football season and will not field a varsity team during the 2027-28 season, the school district announced Tuesday.
Keene ISD cited a high number of injuries and a shortage of healthy players for the decision. The Chargers are 1-4 overall and 0-1 in District 6-3A play during their first season competing in the UIL.
Superintendent Dr. Ricky Stephens said canceling games that affect district opponents was not an easy decision and apologized to the teams affected.
Keene’s final game was a 38-12 loss to Italy High School on Sept. 18, days after the Chargers held their homecoming game and dance.
