A lawsuit over the death of a man who died while in the Dallas County jail has made its way to the US Supreme Court.
The family of Joseph Hutcheson is hoping the High Court will do what the lower courts have not, and that is to let their case be heard.
Hutcheson died August 1st, 2015 after walking into the Dallas County jail lobby while allegedly hight on both cocaine and methamphetamines. Reports say he was stumbling and looking for help, his family said.
Jailers grabbed Hutcheson and there was a struggle. After several minutes, Hutcheson stopped breathing and died.
In the Supreme Court filing the family notes the similarity to the George Floyd case in that there were officers kneeling on Hutcheson, whose death was attributed to the effects of the drugs, plus heart disease, plus the struggle.
But unlike the Floyd case, the jail security camera did not have sound and the court have not considered what witnesses who were in the lobby heard.
The Supreme Court will have to decide whether to accept the case.
