DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- Love Field has renamed its law enforcement building for Dallas Police Sergeant Michael Smith, who was among the five officers killed downtown July 7, 2016. Smith spent 28 years with Dallas Police, including seven worked at Love Field.
"We thought there would be no better honor than to name this building for Sgt. Smith," says Dallas Director of Aviation Mark Duebner. "We owe a debt of gratitude for everyone who works out here."
Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia says Smith earned almost 100 commendations and awards during his career, but Smith would not have wanted to focus on his own accomplishments.
"The Sgt. Michael Smith Law Enforcement Building will be a beacon of light for those who are in need of our service," Garcia says. "This structure will also stand as a reminder that compassion and integrity are essential to how we do our job because that is who Sgt. Smith was. He truly represented the best of mankind."
Garcia says Smith would want the building to "symbolize what he stood for."
"He was a husband who loved his wife dearly and a father who cherished every fiber of his daughters," Garcia says.
Dallas City Council approved renaming the building in September.
