The Dallas Mavericks may have traded away Luka Doncic, but his forename will live on in Texas. According to the Social Security Administration, Luka was among the top 100 baby names in Texas in 2024.
Luka was the 77th most popular name, while Luca was the 32nd most popular. Together, there were more than 1,300 baby boys named Luka in Texas last year. More than 600 boys born in Texas last year were named "Maverick."
The overall top names on the list were Liam, Noah, Olivia, and Emma. Luka started to appear as a top 100 name in Texas during the 2020-21 NBA season, when Luka Doncic became the first NBA player in 22 years to be selected to the All-NBA First Team in either their first or second season.
Four hundred seventy-six boys were named Luka in 2021. That number jumped to 527 boys in 2024, the same year the team went to the NBA Finals. Four hundred thirty-four were named Kai, a nickname often used for Kyrie Irving.
