It's a first for Tarrant County -- a man is charged with murder in a fentanyl-related death.
Fort Worth police charged Jacob Lindsay, 46, with murder for allegedly selling fentanyl to Brandon Harrison, who died from exposure to the drug on Sept. 18 at the age of 26.
The charge is the result of a new state law went into effect Sept. 1.
"When a drug dealer sells somebody fentanyl, and it's a very specific law for fentanyl, and that person dies as a result, then law enforcement can now go after the dope dealers for murder," said Sgt. Scott Banes with the Fort Worth Police Fentanyl Overdose Response Team.
Banes said it's a law that law enforcement agencies have been screaming for for years.
"It's a law that has finally given law enforcement some teeth to be able to go after these drug dealers, and they're going to face real consequences," he said. "The fentanyl epidemic has swung the pendulum, and I think society, I hope, is tired of the revolving door with dope dealers."
Lindsay is behind bars in the Tarrant County Corrections Center, and Banes said he won't be getting out anytime soon.
"You got a $100,000 bond on a murder charge," Banes said. "I don't see us seeing him back out on the stoop next week selling."
