Lewisville police exchanged gunfire with a man at a hotel on Business 121 early Thursday morning before taking him into custody after a three-hour standoff.

Investigators say the man opened fire on officers when he stepped out of a room at the Budget Suites, then retreated inside. Officers called for backup, and when an armored vehicle arrived, the suspect came out again and began shooting at it. Police returned fire, and the man went back into the room.

After several hours, officers deployed tear gas and were able to get the suspect to surrender. He was found with a gunshot wound and taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition has not been released.

Inside the hotel room, officers discovered a woman who was deceased. Her identity has not been released, and investigators have not said how she died.

The case remains under investigation by Lewisville police.
