A McKinney police officer shot and injured a suspect during a chase on Tuesday. Police say 21-year-old Malik Riley is recovering in a hospital.

Police were called to Amscott Street on Tuesday around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a one-vehicle crash. Witnesses told officers that Riley had crashed his car, and then began to wave a gun when he got out of the vehicle.

Police say when they arrived, Riley refused their commands, and then ran off. Officers chased him on foot. One of them deployed their Taser, but it was not effective.

During the chase, police say Riley produced a handgun and turned toward the officers. One of the pursuing officers opened fire. Riley was struck and injured. He has been hospitalized for treatment of his injuries.

Police say there's an arrest warrant for Riley in Colorado on weapons-related charges and he will likely be returned to that state to face charges.

The McKinney Police Department has called in the Texas Rangers to lead the investigation into the shooting.
