McKinney joins several other cities including Dallas and Fort Worth that use automatic license plate cameras to locate stolen vehicles, amber alerts, or suspects involved in specific crimes.
But, some say cameras that constantly record license plates are an invasion of privacy, but local police say they deter crime.
To soothe the privacy concerns of opponents, they say cameras are not for traffic control or surveillance, but only to locate vehicles they are already looking for.
Arlington police also say crimes are down 26% in neighborhoods where cameras are installed, adding that a man may have gotten away with the murder of a woman on New York Avenue last month were it not for cameras that recorded the suspect’s vehicle.
