MCKINNEY (1080 KRLD)- McKinney police have arrested Joel Torres for the murder of his common-law wife. Torres claims it was an accident.
Shailene Velez was shot and killed at the couple's home on Kingsway Lane, south of McKinney Ranch Parkway, November 14th. At the time Torres said he accidentally shot her while cleaning his gun.
"[He called] 911 just after one yesterday afternoon, saying he had accidentally shot his common law wife while trying to clear his gun in the family home," says Carla Marion Reeves, with McKinney police. "She died at the scene."
But after an investigation, detectives have now arrested Torres on a murder charge. He's being held at the Collin County jail on a $200,000 bond.
