Collin County Health Care Services has confirmed a new case of measles, marking the third reported in the county this year. The infected individual visited four public venues in McKinney while contagious between May 19 and May 22, potentially exposing others to the virus.

The locations and times of potential exposure are as follows:
24 Hour Fitness, 1601 N. Hardin Blvd.
Moviehouse & Eatery, 8450 State Highway 121
Cubana Grille, 4051 S. Custer Road, Suite 1160
Market Street, 6100 Eldorado Parkway

Health officials advise individuals who were at these locations during the specified dates and times to monitor for symptoms of measles through June 12. Symptoms typically appear 7 to 14 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a characteristic rash that usually starts on the face and spreads downward.

Measles is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain airborne for up to two hours after the infected individual has left the area. Unvaccinated individuals are at the highest risk of contracting the disease.

This case is part of a broader measles outbreak affecting Texas and other parts of the United States. As of May 2025, over 1,000 measles cases have been reported across 30 states, with Texas experiencing one of the largest outbreaks. Health officials attribute the resurgence to declining vaccination rates, emphasizing the importance of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is about 97% effective after two doses.

Collin County Health Care Services urges residents, especially those who are unvaccinated or unsure of their vaccination status, to contact their healthcare provider for guidance. Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent measles and protect the community from further spread.
