A massive motorcade honoring Medal of Honor recipients is winding through North Texas today, kicking off the annual Medal of Honor Week in Gainesville.

More than 550 vehicles — police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and hundreds of motorcycles from more than 40 law enforcement and first responder agencies — will depart the south end of DFW International Airport between 3 and 5 p.m. Wednesday. The nine-mile-long procession is escorting Medal of Honor recipients and their guests nonstop to Gainesville, America’s official Medal of Honor Host City, which is marking its 25th year hosting the event.

The motorcade is traveling westbound on State Highway 114 through Grapevine and Southlake, then northbound on Interstate 35W through Denton County before continuing north on Interstate 35 through Sanger. It is expected to arrive at Tractor Bob’s on I-35 in Gainesville around 5:15 to 5:30 p.m.

The annual motorcade sets the tone for four days of ceremonies, a blood drive, 5K run/walk, parade and other tributes to the nation’s highest military award recipients. Motorists should expect significant traffic delays and temporary ramp closures, especially along I-35 in Denton County. Officials urge drivers to use alternate routes and give the escorted procession plenty of space.

Communities along the route are invited to line overpasses and shoulders with flags to show gratitude for the extraordinary service and sacrifice of these heroes.
