The City of Mesquite is launching a public awareness campaign to remind residents about the dangers of some crimes that happen around July 4th. The city wants to prevent illegal fireworks, celebratory gunfire and drinking and driving around Independence Day.
"Our message to those in Mesquite with fireworks is that our deployment teams will be out in the community, and we will seize your illegal fireworks and issue you a citation," said Mesquite City Manager Cliff Keheley. "For those who choose to participate in celebratory gunfire or drive while intoxicated, we will arrest you."
During the weekend of July 3rd - 4th, Mesquite Police will have escalated enforcement with the deployment of police and fire staff into neighborhoods. The Mesquite Fire Department is also sending staffers to locations where illegal fireworks have been reported in the past year.
As part of the public awareness campaign, Mesquite residents can request a free yard sign that says "Celebrate Safely - No Fireworks, Gunfire, DWI". Those are available at city recreation centers. The city is also offering signs that say "A Veteran Lives Here - Please be Mindful."
