Methodist Charlton Medical Center has cut the ribbon on an expansion of its emergency room. The hospital on Wheatland Road south of I-20 has nearly doubled the capacity of its emergency room to 70 beds.
"We've needed it for a long time," said Methodist Charlton President Fran Laukaitis. "Our patients deserved it. That's what we've always wanted."
Methodist said the $71 million project also expanded triage areas, hallways and ambulance bays. The construction also included a larger waiting room.
"We have a Charlton family, but the community is also our family," Laukaitis said. "Brothers, sisters. mothers, we want to be here to take care of you. You're not just numbers to us."
Methodist said 70,000 patients use Charlton every year, "making it one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the region."
"We have the only trauma centers south of Downtown [Dallas], magnificent trauma centers," said Methodist Health System Chief Executive Jim Scoggin. "Methodist doesn't grow just for the sake of growing. Everything we do, everywhere we go, there's a need."
Methodist Health plans to break ground on another hospital in Celina, in Collin and Denton Counties, later this year. The system plans to open that hospital in 2025.
