Fifteen restaurants in Texas have been honored with a Michelin one-star rating in the new Michelin Guide Texas. The recommendations from the company's inspectors were announced Monday night in Houston.

Tourism officials in several Texas cities joined forces to put together the funding for the Michelin Guide to do a Texas edition.

"The Texas restaurant industry is a cornerstone of our economy, contributing more than $100 billion sales last year...and serving as the state's largest private-sector employer," said Adriana Cruz, Executive Director of the Texas Office of Economic Development and Tourism

In addition to the restaurants honored with the coveted star, the guide also includes a list of restaurants that did not earn a star - but are still recommended.

Austin has seven restaurants that received a star. Houston has five, with one more in the Houston suburb of Spring. San Antonio has one restaurant and Dallas also has one.

The Michelin Guide honored Tatsu Dallas, which is a sushi restaurant on Elm Street on the edge of Deep Ellum.

"With just 10 counter seats, the greatest challenge is securing a reservation at this sushi restaurant within the renovated Continental Gin Building - but perseverance will be rewarded because this is the genuine article," the inspectors wrote.

Several restaurants in DFW made the guide's "Bib Gourmand" list, which recognizes restaurants for great food at a great value. Those include Goldee's in Fort Worth and Ngon Vietnamese Kitchen in Dallas.

The guide also announced a special award. The Michelin Exceptional Cocktails Award was given to Julian Shaffer at Rye on Greenville Avenue in Dallas.

"Everything goes to taking care of people and making things that other people are going to enjoy," Shaffer said. "Paying attention and representing the people in front of me is always the biggest concern."
