A 21-year-old man from Midlothian is in federal custody, accused of attempting to support terrorism by sending bomb components and money to someone he believed was an ISIS fighter, according to federal prosecutors.

Authorities say the alleged activity involved meetings and material support that ultimately led to the man's arrest.

Prosecutors said the suspect communicated with and met what he believed was an ISIS-affiliated individual, who was actually an undercover law enforcement officer. During those interactions, officials allege the man provided explosive-related materials and financial support, actions that form the basis of multiple federal charges.

The case was investigated by federal authorities and filed in U.S. District Court. Officials said the arrest was the result of an undercover operation and emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation remains active as the case moves through the federal court system.
