'Mix and Match' COVID-19 vaccine booster study underway in Texas

A study in Houston will help determine if we can mix and match Covid-19 vaccines when it comes to booster shots.

The point of the study is to find out of it matters which vaccine is given as a booster. The first phase is underway at the Baylor College of Medicine. They have recruited 150 fully vaccinated individuals to get a Moderna booster. 50 of them are vaccinated with Moderna, 50 with Pfizer and 50 with Johnson and Johnson.

Dr. Robert Atmar with the Baylor College of Medicine says "It will give us some idea about general safety and it will give us a better idea about immune responses."

Going forward, they'll test the Johnson and Johnson shot as a booster and them perhaps the Pfizer, or another vaccine.

Dr. Atmar says there is a point to be made for mixing and matching vaccines.  "With different platform there is some data from other vaccines with the boost being a different platform than what was originally used that there can be even better immune responses."   Pfizer and Moderna are mRNA shots while J&J is a viral vector vaccine.
