More Texans will soon be eligible for COVID-19 vaccine

Starting Monday, all Texans 50 to 64 will be able to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

Chris Van Deusen with the Texas Department of State Health Services says over half the people 65 and older, some two million have gotten at least one dose. About 30 percent are fully vaccinated.

He says the 50 to 64 group is a big one. "It is about five million people, per the census estimate. About a million have already gotten vaccinated, either by being a healthcare worker or having an underlying health condition."

He says the supply of vaccine the next couple of weeks may be a little less, because there won't be any shots from Johnson and Johnson.  The company is now ramping up production.  Van Deusen says Texas may get some extra doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

About 7.2 million doses of vaccine have been given in Texas.   4.7 million people have gotten at least one shot and more than 2.5 million are fully vaccinated.
