Dallas (1080 KRLD)- Many Texans have gotten an extension to register to get help for damage caused by February's wicked ice storm.
At Governor Abbott's request, Texans in qualifying counties have until May 20th to submit damages and make claims to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA's Nate Custer says this applies to 126 counties, a huge number for a FEMA disaster declaration.
"Compared to a tornado or flooding or even a hurricane, because this reach of this bitter cold weather was so widespread," said Custer. "Sort of basically the eastern and parts of the northeastern part of the state, and all the way down to the coast."
He says this money is for emergency home repairs. "To try to make your home safe, secure and functional. Not to repair every room, but to give you a basic leak-proof roof and walls that have resistance to them and give you peace and comfort.
Due to the pandemic, FEMA inspectors will work virtually. In normal times, they would come out to see you.
To register go to disasterassistance.gov.
You can also register by calling 800-621-3362.
He urges those affected to apply, whether or not they have insurance. All income levels are eligible. The funding is geared towards emergency home repairs.
