Morning rain leads to water rescues on Metroplex highway

635
Texas Dept of Transportation

GARLAND (1080 KRLD)- High water shut down part of Interstate 635 in Garland Monday morning. Up to four inches of rain fell within a three-hour period, and the rain led to high water on 635 near Garland Road.

Eleven miles of 635 are being rebuilt and expanded in Dallas County. The project stretches from Highway 75 to Interstate 30.

The $1.74 billion project started in 2020 and is expected to wrap up next year. Meantime, some areas have the highway running below ground level in spots that may not have standard drainage.

Two cars were stranded in the westbound lanes when rain was falling. Garland Fire helped those to safety.

All westbound lanes were closed for several hours with lanes starting to open about 9 a.m. There have been no reports of injuries.
