Elon Musk said Sunday that The Boring Company is working on a “simple, precursor Hyperloop tunnel” between Austin and San Antonio that would move passengers at more than 200 mph and cut a drive that can take up to 2 1/2 hours to a consistent trip under 30 minutes.
The claim came in a post on X. The company’s account replied that it “would be excited and honored to build this massive infrastructure project.” Musk did not list a route, cost, funding plan or construction timeline, and he did not say whether the system would use Tesla-style vehicles like the company’s Las Vegas Loop or pods in low-pressure tubes from his 2013 hyperloop paper.
The Houston Chronicle reported that transportation officials in Austin and San Antonio said they had not heard from Musk or the company before the post. Jori Liu of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority said it was unclear whether the “precursor” would be faster electric cars or a true vacuum-tube system. She noted an earlier Boring proposal to link San Antonio International Airport and downtown was selected years ago, then stalled. Liu said an 80-mile intercity tunnel would face permits, environmental review and land-rights hurdles.

Due to traffic congestion, that journey can currently take up to 2.5 hours. @BoringCompany can reduce that to a consistent <30 mins.
TxDOT has studied passenger rail on existing tracks between the cities and estimated a two-hour train could draw more than 2,000 daily riders. About 113,000 weekday trips already move between Bexar and Travis counties. Travis County has also looked at a new rail line beside Interstate 10 and Texas 130.
The Boring Company has operations in Bastrop and is finishing a test tunnel there. Its only operating passenger system is the Vegas Loop. Other announced tunnels in Chicago, Los Angeles and the Northeast never advanced. The company recently raised about $3 billion, Bloomberg reported.
For now, the Austin-San Antonio idea remains a social-media announcement, not an approved project.
