A 13-year-old North Texas boy convicted of murder in the shooting of a Sonic Drive-In employee in Keene is sentenced to 12 years.

A Johnson County judge handed down the sentence after days of hearings over what punishment the boy should face in the rare murder case against a child.

According to the Johnson County Attorney’s office - he will start his sentence in the custody of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and he may later be transferred to the state’s adult prison system.

The boy could have gotten anywhere from probation to 40 years behind bars.

Last month jurors decided he was responsible for the murder of the Sonic employee back in May who had a fight with his uncle.

The boy's uncle was also arrested after the shooting and later indicted on a charge of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
