The National Weather Service says storms could threaten North Texas late Monday afternoon and evening. Damaging wind and tornadoes can't be ruled out. But large hail is the biggest concern.

"Looks like we'll begin to see storms develop out west, about 4 or 5 PM this afternoon, maybe into the 6, 7 o'clock time frame reaching our northwest areas," says Meteorologist Monique Sellers with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. "These storms will actually be pretty quick to move through, so we're expecting everything to move through the area shortly after midnight.

“Initially, we will have maybe a lower tornado threat with our storms that develop in the northwest (portion of North Texas), so that'll be something to keep an eye on for sure.”

Sellers emphasized the importance of preparing for the potential severe weather, especially for those who may find themselves on the roads during this evening.

The National Weather Service recommends avoiding stopping under overpasses. Sellers emphasized the need to have a plan ahead of time when traveling in severe weather.

“Go ahead and make those plans ahead of time so you don't find yourself in a situation where you're having to make that decision last minute,” she advised.

As of this morning, there was still a "cap" (a layer of warm air) above North Texas, which could help prevent storms from forming. But Sellers says they expect that condition to change later Monday.

“When you have the dry line push through, that will help us break that cap along with just heating throughout the day today," Sellers added.

Sellers indicated that the National Weather Service in Fort Worth would be sending up another balloon later in the afternoon to assess the situation.
