Dozens of North Texas firefighters are heading to Southern California to help crews battle wildfires that have killed at least 24 and forced hundreds of thousands to evacuate.
Dallas Fire-Rescue will deploy six crew members to assist with response efforts. Four of the Dallas firefighters will be joining a larger team of firefighters from Greenville, Allen, Frisco, McKinney, Krum, and Parker County. The combined team is specially trained in wildfire suppression, capable of tackling fires in difficult and hazardous environments, such as steep terrain and high temperatures.
The other two fire and rescue team members will join the Texas Emergency Medical Task Force providing critical medical support to fire crews.
"We stand in solidarity with the teams of firefighters working to protect lives and property," Dallas Fire-Rescue Interim Fire Chief Justin Bell said. "Dallas Fire-Rescue Department is always ready to step in to support our fellow firefighters, especially in these extremely challenging conditions."
The deployments are expected to last up to 14 days, with the possibility of extension based on operational needs and conditions on the ground.
