A North Texas high school is mourning the loss of a football coach who died from COVID-19.

James Shillam had recently joined the football staff at Allen High School. His family says it was his dream to coach at the largest high school in the state.

The 56-year-old Shillam was infected with COVID-19 earlier this month. He died on Sunday without ever having the opportunity to teach a class or coach a game at Allen.

According to reports, Shillam had made the personal choice to not get vaccinated.

He will be honored Friday night when the Eagles open the season at home against Plano East.
