A Wills Point woman has been sentenced to federal prison for fraud violations for stealing money from elderly victims.
It's a play on the foreign crooks who claim to be a Prince, but need to borrow your money. But in this case, it was a Wills Point woman who claimed she had won a big lawsuit, but needed some cash until her payout came in.
A federal judge has sentenced 62-year-old Lisa Lynn Smith to 20 months in federal prison for pulling the scam on an elderly Plano man.
Prosecutors say Smith convinced the victim that she had won a $2.5 million lawsuit, but needed money until her check came in. Smith did win a lawsuit, but it was for nowhere near that amount.
Court records show she convinced the victim to give her money and access to a credit card which was spent on personal and family expenses.
As part of the plea deal, she has to pay the victim back nearly $50,000.
