The Texas Department of Transportation is starting a two-year project to convert a portion of the HOV lane on Central Expressway in Collin County into a "Technology Lane."
The HOV lane on U.S. 75 between President George Bush Turnpike in Plano and the Sam Rayburn Tollway in McKinney will be closed starting at 9 a.m. on Friday. The southbound HOV lane will also eventually be affected. Construction on the conversion project is expected to take two years.
TxDOT said the "Technology Lane" will be open to high-occupancy vehicles, low-emissions vehicles, motorcycles, and single-occupant vehicles during non-peak hours. During peak congestion times, the lane will be available to HOVs, low-emissions vehicles, and motorcycles.
The conversion project will involve replacing the double white stripes and pylons with broken white stripes to allow for continuous ingress and egress between the technology lanes and general-purpose lanes. Crews will also install messaging signs and new overhead signs along with new lighting.
The entire project is projected to cost $58.8 million. The new "Technology Lane" is scheduled to open 2026.
