Not all the races were decided last night, and some Texas races are headed to a run-off.
Texas voters have 27 run-off elections to look forward to in May. The bad news about that is there will be another 83 days of political ads.
GOP Strategist Vinny Minchillo tells 1080 KRLD that Texas has seen $56 million worth of political advertising so far during this campaign season, combining television, radio, and digital. And with almost three months before the run-offs, you can imagine how many more ads will be flying around the airwaves.
In the race for Dallas County Sheriff, incumbent Sheriff Marian Brown will face former Sheriff Lupe Valdez in a runoff election.
In Tarrant County, Democrat Patrick Moses will face incumbent Republican Sheriff Bill Waybourn in the November general election.
Another of those run-offs is in the Beaumont area where Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan is running for re-election. But last night he came in second to David Covey, and although neither got 50 percent of the vote, it means a May 28th run-off. Covey has endorsements from a number of high-ranking Republicans including Governor Abbott and former President Trump.
And in the race to replace retiring Fort Worth Congresswoman Kay Granger, there will be a GOP run-off between Craig Goldman and John O'Shea. On the Dallas County side, David Blewett and Darrell Day will have a run-off for the GOP nomination in US House District 32, the seat vacated by Colin Allred so he can run against Senator Cruz in November. On the other side, Julie Johnson won her race outright over three other Democrats.
In south Texas, Houston Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee faced two challengers in the Democratic Party Primary. Some observers thought she might not win re-election after running for Mayor of Houston. She lost that race to John Whitmire.
Yesterday Jackson-Lee got more than 60% of the vote in the primary election and will be on the ballot again for US Congress this fall. Her district is heavily Democratic, she has been in office since 1995.
