A city plan to house homeless people at a former hospital in Oak Cliff is causing some concern among residents in that area.
Several residents turned out at a community meeting Thursday night to tell city officials to take the homeless shelter plan elsewhere. Many said they feel like it's a threat to the community. Reports say the meeting got heated at one point and leaders threatened to end the meeting.
Dallas city council member Chad West spoke up and the meeting to assure residents people wouldn't be "coming and going" every week. The shelter would provide longterm housing for residents who agree to the facility's rules.
The planned shelter on South Hampton Road is located across from Kiest Park, as well as a city library connected to an elementary school.
The city of Dallas reportedly paid $6.5 million for the 12 acre site. It could be used to house people relatively soon, but West says nothing is set in stone yet.
