It's a sad tradition and one which was re-enacted in Dallas on Wednesday afternoon.
Following the death of Dallas police officer Jacob Arellano at Methodist Hospital, his fellow officers formed a long procession to escort his body from the hospital along the five mile route to the Dallas County Medical Examiner building along Stemmons near Wycliff.
Along the way, people paused along city streets or on freeway overpasses to offer their respects.
