One person died Thursday after jumping from a bridge during an hours-long police standoff that shut down the Interstate 45 and Interstate 20 interchange in southern Dallas.

Dallas police responded to the scene around 9:40 a.m. near the eastbound LBJ Freeway ramp and northbound Julius Schepps Freeway in the Hutchins area, according to The Dallas Morning News. Officers closed all lanes of the interchange beginning around 10 a.m., and the closure extended to I-20 East running beneath the bridge. The standoff involved a person standing near the side of the bridge next to a silver-colored sedan. Police attempted to speak with the individual for several hours before the person jumped. Dallas police later confirmed the individual had been pronounced deceased at the scene.

Traffic backed up for miles in all directions on both interstates throughout the afternoon. At least a dozen police and emergency vehicles were visible at the location as the incident unfolded. Texas Department of Transportation cameras showed the lanes had reopened by about 6:15 p.m.

Dallas police posted on X during the closure, urging motorists to avoid I-45 northbound and southbound as well as I-20 eastbound and westbound. The department listed alternate routes including Loop 12, Wintergreen Road, South Lancaster Road, and S.M. Wright Freeway (Highway 310).

The closure affected a major transportation corridor in southern Dallas County and forced drivers to seek other paths for several hours. No other injuries were reported. The investigation remains ongoing.

Officials reminded the public that help is available for anyone in crisis by dialing 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
