FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) -- Plans to celebrate the newest national holiday, Juneteenth, are happening across the U.S.

In North Texas, there are several events happening, but one in particular stands out in Fort Worth: Opal Lee's Walk for Freedom.

On Saturday, Lee will embark on her annual 2.5 mile walk to recognize the two and a half years it took for the news of freedom to reach all enslaved people in the United States.

The "Grandmother of Juneteenth" said if she could do the walk today -- she'd be in tip-top shape! She said the heat will not keep her from her mission.

There will be simultaneous walks in cities from coast to coast. For those who are unable to join a walk near them, Lee said even walking in your neighborhood or on a treadmill can allow you to be part of the movement to raise awareness.

Registration is still open. The walk starts at 10 a.m. and a breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. at 1050 Evans Ave in Fort Worth.
