The Grapevine-Colleyville school district said no to a Scholastic Book Fair this year so parents organized one of their own.
The parents sponsored book fair is happening Friday and Saturday at the Grapevine Convention Center. A grassroots group called 'United for GCISD' decided to organize the book fair, a long time tradition in the district.
This year district leaders cancelled the book fair because Scholastic couldn't provide a complete list of books that would be for sale, according to reports.
United for GCISD told Scholastic it didn't need a list saying parents and kids should decide together what students should read. Volunteers say the books fairs have been a positive experience for students in the past and has helped students develop a love for reading.
Some parents say it's shameful the board ended the book fair over what many consider politics.
The book fair runs from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the Grapevine Convention Center and from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
